Types of Motion: Motion is defined as the change in the position of an object with respect to time. This topic of motion forms the important basis of the foundation of physics. the definition of motion is described in terms of distance, displacement, Speed, and time. example of motion includes our daily activities such as walking, running, and the falling of dust from the mat while hitting involves the concept of motion, etc. There are various types of motions happening in our surroundings and they basically depend upon the speed, distance, distance, and path.

Types of Motion

There are basically different types of motion that are divided based on different criteria. The basis of division can be based upon the nature of the movement, as per state of motions, and as per direction, these are-

  • Linear Motion
  • Rotatory Motion
  • Oscillatory Motion
  • Uniform Motion
  • Non-uniform Motion
  • One-dimensional Motion
  • Two-dimensional Motion
  • Three-dimensional Motion

Types of Motion As Per Nature of Movement

As per Nature of Movement

Based upon the nature of the movement, that is, the path on which the object moves also determines the basis of types of motion. They are of the following types:

Types of Motion as per the nature of the movement
Types of MotionDefinition Examples
Linear MotionIn linear motion, the movement of particles from one point to another in either a straight line(referred to as Rectilinear motion) or a curved path(referred to as curvilinear motion). The motion of the train, football, the motion of cars on the road, etc.
Rotatory MotionIn rotatory motion, the particles rotate on their own axis. The motion of the earth about its own axis,  the motion of wheels and the steering wheel about its own axis, etc.
Oscillatory MotionIn Oscillatory motion, the movement of particles takes place back and front, that is to and fro movement The child on a swing, The pendulum of a clock, The string of the guitar, etc.

Types of Motion As Per State of Motions

As per the State of Motions

Based upon the state of motions, there are two types of motions, namely:

Types of Motion As per the State of Motions
Types of MotionDefinition Examples
Uniform MotionsState of motion in which the body covers an equal distance in equal intervals of time The car moving on a straight road at a steady speed, a flying airplane at a set height at a constant speed, etc
Non-uniform MotionsState of motions in which the body covers an unequal distance in given intervals of time.  a man walking on the road, a freely falling body, a train moving at various speed limits, etc.

Types of Motion As Per Direction

As per the direction

Based on the direction, there are three types of motions, namely:

Types of Motion As per the direction
Types of MotionDefinition Examples
One-dimensional motionMotion along a straight line or in a single directionThe motion of a car or a person driving down a straight road or jogging on a straight track etc.
Two-dimensional motionMotion both in a horizontal and vertical component of the axis.Throwing a rock or kicking the ball usually produces a projectile pattern of motion that has both a vertical and a horizontal component.
Three-dimensional motionMotion in all three axis, that is, X, Y, and Z axis.Movement of gyroscope
