Staff Selection Commission (SSC) conducts the Combined Graduate Level (CGL) examination annually to recruit eligible candidates for various Group B and Group C posts in different Ministries, Departments, and Organisations of the Government of India. As SSC CGL Notification 2025 is scheduled to be released on 22nd April 2025 according to the annual calendar, candidates after completing their graduation must enrol for the Combined Graduate Level Examination 2025. So to make the selection process easy, SSC only conducts Tier 1 and Tier 2 Examinations, which are both computer-based.  

Stages in SSC CGL Selection Process

The SSC CGL selection process involves Tier 1 computer-based exam followed by tier 2. After qualifying in both stages, candidates have to appear for the Document Verification (DV) round. 

SSC CGL Tier 1 

Computer-Based Test (CBT 1)- Tier I is a qualifying stage, and the marks scored in this tier are not considered for the final merit list. It serves as a screening test to shortlist candidates for Tier-II.

  • Mode of Examination: Computer-Based (Online)
  • Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Negative Marking: There is a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each incorrect answer.
  • Language of Examination: Questions will be set in both English and Hindi, except for the English Comprehension section.
  • Normalisation of Scores: If the examination is conducted in multiple shifts, the scores will be normalized.
  • Qualifying Nature: Candidates need to secure the minimum qualifying marks prescribed by the SSC to be eligible for Tier-II. The minimum qualifying marks are generally fixed at 30% for UR, 25% for OBC/EWS, and 20% for all other categories.

SSC CGL Tier 2

Computer-Based Test (CBT 2)- Tier-II is the main examination, and the scores obtained in this tier are crucial for the final selection. It consists of several papers, and the specific papers a candidate needs to appear for depend on the posts they have applied for. 

Key Points for SSC CGL Tier 2

  • Mode of Examination: Computer-Based (Online)
  • Type of Questions: Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
  • Negative Marking: In Paper I, there will be a negative marking of 1 mark for each wrong answer in Section I and Section II. There is no negative marking in the Computer Knowledge Test and DEST modules of Section III. For Paper-II and Paper-III, there will be a negative marking of 0.50 marks for each incorrect answer.
  • Language of Examination: Questions in Paper-I will be in both English and Hindi, except for the English Language and Comprehension module. Paper-II and Paper-III will also be bilingual.
  • Compulsory Papers: Paper I is compulsory for all candidates who qualify in Tier-I. Paper-II and Paper-III are only for candidates applying for specific posts and who are shortlisted for these papers based on their Tier-I performance.
  • Merit Determination: The final merit list will be prepared based on the overall performance in Tier-II.

Document Verification

Candidates who qualify in the Tier-II examination will be called for Document Verification (DV). They will have to produce original documents along with self-attested photocopies in support of their eligibility, identity, age, educational qualifications, category, etc., as mentioned in the official notification. Failure to produce the required documents will lead to disqualification.

Note- The final selection of the candidates for SSC CGL vacancies will solely depend on the marks scored by the candidates in tier 2 exam.
